Must be because they started with the GURPS hex grid first, I speculate.

A scenario sheet would be nice as well.ģ) The Traveller grid seemed slightly out of alignment with the GURPS hex grid (squares not starting at walls, etc). It can't kill Steve *that* much to print an additional sheet. You'll need convention-sized table space for that with this scale.Ģ) An accompanying 8 1/2 x 11 sheet with stats and descriptions for each location on the ship would be useful. If you have players like mine, they'll have things happening in *every* part of the ship, and they'll want to see it all at the same time. The upper size limit for this scale would be at about 400 tons. The original 15mm Traveller plans were in 1/100 scale- a thousand ton ship could be laid out on a dining table (and was in FASA's Merchant Class Ships). The plans, and the Cardboard Heroes can easily be used for other game systems as well.ġ) 1/36 scale makes for great detail, but it's trouble unless you have a great deal of table space free. Can't say enough good things about the re-issuance of these figures, and it's a splendid complement for the deck plans.Īll this means that the plans are well suited to both Classic Traveller and GURPS. As a bonus, one sheet of Traveller Cardboard Heroes are included. The plans are on slick 17" x 22" paper, very well illustrated and laid out, and best of all, are double sided for GURPS' 1:36 hex scale on one side, and Classic Traveller's 1.5 meter square grid on the reverse. Yes, I know about inflation, it's the *psychology* of the customer's perception of percieved value.

Not the least of these comparisons was that Snapshot was $12.00 (including a complete standalone game), and the new series of deck plans are in the $20.00 range. For example, the forward Stewards section of the ship on the upper deck has an angled ceiling with what appears to be an average headroom of around two feet. The immediate comparison is "Snapshot", the first boxed companion set for Traveller by GDW, and the first with offical deck plans for the Beowulf. Finally, on a less important level, there are also discrepancies between the floor-plans themselves and the outer hull of the ship - as is common with many official traveller deck plans. Having twenty-plus years of material to compare it with is a tough act to follow. Popular conversions include the Hammer-Hunter variant used by bounty hunters and the Ore Hammer variant used by belters.I must confess that this old grongnard had his doubts with regard to SJG's line of deck plans for GURPS Traveller.

With it's relatively large cargo bay adjacent to the main airlock, the Hammer Class is easily converted to other uses. The merchant ship requires a crew of three: pilot/navigator, engineer, medic/gunner. There is one ship's vehicle: an enclosed 4 man air/raft. Installed on the hardpoint is a pop-out double turret, which mounts two beam lasers. The ship has one hardpoint and one ton allocated to fire control. There are three staterooms and no low berths. Adjacent to the bridge is a computer Model 1bis. 13 two-sided map sheets with a 4-color cover insert, with one sheet of Traveller-specific Cardboard Heroes in ziplock bag.

Using a custom 100-ton hull, the Hammer Class Merchant is a commercial vessel used for small cargo shipping and trading purposes. As time allows, I'd like to clean them up and post them here. I've got a sketchbook filled with deck plan sketches, mostly small stuff - 100 to 200 tons, merchant ships, scouts and couriers, a few small military ships.
